About New Roots Stories

New Roots Stories started with a simple frustration: turn on the news, and immigrants are almost always the subject of an argument — a policy fight, a talking point, a headline built to make you angry or afraid. Rarely are they just people. People who moved somewhere new and are quietly, stubbornly making it better.

This site exists to build a different kind of record — one made up of teachers, business owners, mentors, and neighbors who left one home and are strengthening another. Not a rebuttal to anything, not a counterargument. Just the stories themselves, told plainly: a bakery that anchored a struggling block, a market that grew from one folding table into a neighborhood’s Saturday gathering spot, a volunteer program that’s tutored hundreds of kids for free. As this grows, the goal is a real, living collection of these stories — including a “Top 100” list recognizing immigrant-owned businesses and community builders worth knowing about.

Every story here is grounded in real reporting — a local news outlet, a nonprofit, a public record — and credited back to where it came from. If we can’t point to the source, we don’t publish it.
